I was taking one of my nine-year-olds to the doctor this morning, and as we sat in traffic he was asking questions about all the cars we saw around us. Then he asked me, "If you could have one car in the world, which one would it be?" That's a tough question. I said that sometimes it would be nice to have a small fast car that only seats two, other times I would like to have something larger that I could carry our family in. It would be tough to have just one. So Oppo, if you could have ONE car of your choice, which would it be?

If I could have only one car and it had to do everything I needed/wanted I'd have to go Wrangler Unlimited. If I won't have to feed, insure and buy this vehicle I'd go with a four door Raptor.

Jeep GC SRT8! The only drawback would be the shitty fuel economy, other than that this would meet 99% of my needs.

Here me out.

Technically seats 6 so room for the family, and has a massive trunk. Fun to drive too!

I'd want my 1975 Suburban back. It suffered catastrophic engine failure at a time when I was afraid to even change my own oil. Were it to happen today I'd have kept it.

There're lots of ways to answer that. Are we talking one car for the rest of eternity or just what you would own right now? Is budget unlimited or realistic?

If I had to trim the current fleet down to one I'd probably keep the FiST. It's a good balance of usability, efficiency, fun, can take the dog with the seats down, and can do 4 people in a pinch. It really is the 'at this point in time what's the one car you'd own' answer for me'. If I had unlimited budget and maintenance was thrown out but it's still replaceable when circumstances change it'd be a FF or Panamera GTS.

If it was a forever vehicle but realistic budget I'd probably pick up a 90s Suburban again. I'd want the ability to tow, the ease of maintenance, and the mass interior volume. I'd deal with the flexibility. Unlimited budget forever car it'd be a 4x4 overland full sized van with a decent conversion interior.

The question was asked by a 9-y-o, so he doesn't understand all those details. That's why I was really unable to answer him. It's a tough all.

That's why it was a tough question. Your answers differ as your life's needs differ. As the 48-year-old father of three, my answer is much different than it would have been when I was 22 and single.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Have fun at the track, then take up into the mountains, follow by transporting your entire family to Trader Joe's for grocery shopping.

And it's arguably more reliable than a Range Rover Sport.

I'm 36, have three kids and love spirited driving, so this is insanely hard to answer. But maybe not hard enough.

Kinja'd!!!

Jaguar XJ series III, 4.2 with a manual.

I would not hesitate to upgrade the engine with programmable injection and ignition, maybe even swap an AJ6 4.0 in, would definitely need an LSD for winter driving, and the brakes should see some upgrades too (EBC has that covered). Aricon and the electrical wiring will all need to be completely rebuilt, but once all this is done, and with these mods all unseen from inside or out, this would do very nicely in deed. Fast for now, comfortable for later, presentable at work and on weekends too, and sits five. This is perfect.

Oh, and the consumption? Because I never ever going to pay the fees and expenses associated with buying and selling cars, i shouldn't care about that either.

Only one? That's tough one. Maybe a Porsche 911 3.0 RSR replica. If I don't have any other cars to mess with I don't need any cargo capacity so 911 should be big enough.

I need 4wd, ability to tow a small trailer, decent on fuel, somewhat fun to drive, nice interior, great for picking up babes, relatively cheap lease rates....

According to my math, that leaves this:

For fun that I have to live with everyday, I'm torn between an E90 M3 or an E36 M3/4/5.

I think the real choice would be between RS6 Avant or E63 AMG wagon.

Must list:

- manual

- decent power/handling

- capable of road trips, light offroading, light towing, hauling kayaks, etc.

- room for 5

Seems like it will be some Audi/VW or Subaru wagon. Maybe the new Speed3? Focus ST? Chevy SS converted to a Holden wagon? My E90 M3 converted to an E91?

Ah, the old "one car in the world" game. I hate this game. Seriously though, how in the world could you lock yourself down to one? So I'm going to assume that this isn't a lifetime thing, in which case I would choose what I'm driving now. Its the one car in the world that I want for right now (within reason)

Considering you can have motorcycles as your fun go fast vehicles I'd say some sort of truck/suv for hauling shit around. If I had to pick one vehicle (no bikes) I'd say CTS wagon V6 awd manual, which doesn't exist.

Yep. I'm soon to be a father of two, hence the Audi wagon. It can pull a trailer to Home Depot if I need it to. It was either that or a VW Doka Syncro, but the Audi wins because it's a Porsche built fast wagon.

Well, it was a nine-year-old asking the question. It's a pretty common thing with kids that age. But that's why I have two cars, because having only one will always be a compromise of sorts, if you care to compromise.

Having been a VW man all my life, I'm intrigued by the upcoming 2015 Jetta SportWagen. My '01 Golf is over 200k miles, and will need to be replaced at some point. The best thing it has going for it right now is that it is paid for and still runs like a champ. Which means that I'll probably hold on to it for a while longer. But I love the idea of a sporty wagon, as it would cover my requirements for family room + fun.

We had an appointment booked for march next year to order the new car but the dealership has said we can order it in december and pick it up in march next year with the new '16' licence plate.

A colleague got a nice offer from Skoda for his two year old Roomster. If he wanted to swap his two year old car for a brand new one for £2,000. Some Skodas are in such high demand on the second hand/used market they get in touch with looked after cars and offer to buy them back or to swap for a new one (with £2,000 of course).
